Chapter 20
Overview
At Samantha’s reception, Eloise dotes on Jasper and openly snubs his indifferent father, prompting Jasper to realize he feels nothing for his ex and is finished seeking his parents’ approval. He and Eloise escape upstairs for an intimate interlude, deepening their bond. Jasper resolves to make their marriage real, planning to tell her once home.
Summary
During Samantha’s wedding reception, Eloise slowly shifts in her chair until she is effectively in Jasper’s lap, shutting out his father and giving Jasper her full attention. They banter about hotel ideas—a rooftop garden and a fountain—and plan a helicopter tour for their extra day in Italy. Jasper notes his parents’ indifference to Eloise and feels protective and grateful for Eloise’s loyalty.
As the first dance starts, Jasper watches Samantha and realizes he feels nothing—no pain, envy, or longing. The moment brings relief and clarity: he is done with Samantha and done chasing his parents’ affection. He focuses on Eloise, who worries about a “bathroom run-in” with mean-spirited guests, and he assures her they can use their hotel room.
When Eloise leaves for the restroom, Samantha approaches Jasper, probing about his wife. Jasper confidently describes Eloise as beautiful “inside and out” and labels himself “happy,” surprising Samantha. He ends the conversation and follows Eloise upstairs.
In their room, their nerves gone, Jasper and Eloise have intense, affirming sex, reinforcing Jasper’s conviction that they belong together. Afterward, he tends to her and nearly tells her he wants to stay in Montana and make the marriage real, but decides to wait until they are home.
They choose to return to the reception for snacks and more champagne. Jasper silently commits to Eloise, envisioning a future together and teasing her that he has his own dessert planned later—his wife.
