Chapter 27
Overview
Two weeks after the shooting, Jasper and Eloise navigate recovery, postponed intimacy, and lingering trauma. They head to a family dinner where the Edens rally around them. Jasper reflects on Winn’s lifesaving actions and the investigation revealing Blaze’s prior violence, and resolves to seek therapy. The gathering affirms Jasper’s place in the family.
Summary
Jasper tries to initiate sex, but Eloise refuses, worried about his still-healing shoulder. After a heated kiss, they agree to wait until after a family dinner at the ranch, underscoring their renewed commitment and the balance between desire and recovery.
Jasper admits to recurring nightmares about Blaze and privately considers therapy, choosing not to burden Eloise yet. They reaffirm their love and leave for dinner, remaining physically close as a way to soothe triggers tied to the shooting.
On the drive, Jasper reflects on the Edens’ unwavering support since the hospital: Anne’s daily help, Harrison’s firewood, siblings’ constant visits, and Mateo managing the hotel. He recalls Winn’s debrief: Blaze had killed Lydia, filmed animal cruelty, posted violent rants, and surveilled Jasper and Eloise before the attack, confirming the magnitude of the averted threat.
Arriving at the ranch, Harrison and Anne greet them with emotion and gratitude. Inside, the bustling household—Foster and Talia discussing baby names, Knox with Drake, Memphis with their infant, Griffin and Harrison talking ranch work, Mateo playing with niece Emma—demonstrates the family’s effort to heal together.
Amid the noise, Lyla checks on Jasper, teasing that fate spared them a love triangle because he would have fallen for Eloise anyway. Jasper recognizes he’s part of the family now and welcomes the belonging that steadies both him and Eloise.
