Chapter 23
Overview
After weeks of post-explosion distance, Georgia’s fear surfaces, and Jess grounds her with comfort and a blunt talk that culminates in a spontaneous proposal. Georgia accepts and later prepares Rowen for their new family.
At the ER, Georgia treats overdosed teen Scott Pierce, who threatens her and Rowen, pushing her to leave work and alert Jess.
Summary
Jess returns to work a month after the explosion, finds a dentist postcard, and realizes Georgia hid her recent birthday. He presses her about acting distant. An intense sexual reconnection breaks Georgia’s emotional dam, and she finally admits relentless fear and flashbacks of Jess’s near-death.
Jess reassures Georgia that they must live fully despite risk and asks her to reengage with their life together. He then proposes simply and immediately; Georgia joyfully accepts, and the ring later cements her shift from fear to hope.
The next morning, Georgia gently tells Rowen about marrying Jess. Rowen is unfazed, excited about a dress, and quietly asks if Jess can be her daddy; Georgia encourages her to ask him.
At the ER, a father, Scott Pierce, rushes in with his semi-conscious teen son, Scottie. Georgia and Everett treat an apparent oxycodone overdose with an antidote. When Scottie awakens, he’s hostile and threatens to harm Georgia and Rowen if she tells Jess.
Shaken, Georgia leaves work early, retrieves Rowen from preschool to keep her close, and resolves to tell Jess about Scottie’s threat so he can protect them.
