Chapter 13
Overview
Jess brings Gigi and Rowen to a packed high school football game, effectively introducing them as his family to the town. Wes Drummond confronts them with Jess’s ex, Andrea, provoking tension and gossip. At home, Jess and Gigi address jealousy, his casual past, and agree to soon discuss Rowen’s father.
Summary
After Ryan completes the oversized new garage, Jess teases Gigi about its features and insists they attend the Prescott High football game. Gigi resists being ordered but relents when Rowen eagerly wants to go, irritated by Jess’s high-handedness.
At the crowded stadium, Jess leads them to prime seats among friends. He buys food and surprises Rowen with a Mustangs sweatshirt, over Gigi’s concern about spoiling her. Gigi meets Maisy’s parents and brothers, including Beau from Search and Rescue, and Nick from the fire department.
In the restroom break, Maisy explains the game is a social stage and says the town views Jess bringing Gigi as a public claim. She also warns that Jess’s ex, Andrea, is spreading rumors that Jess wants Gigi only for the farmhouse, unsettling Gigi.
At halftime, Jess introduces Gigi to Nick. Wes Drummond approaches with Andrea, taunting Jess and making a veiled boast about the recent arson. Jess and Silas bristle but avoid a scene as Wes and Andrea retreat, turning the night into a public drama.
After the game and a Mustang win, they go home. Following sex, Gigi admits jealousy and discomfort over Andrea and town gossip. Jess reveals his history of casual relationships, says Andrea was only an on-and-off hookup, and promises to give Gigi a heads-up about past flings. He asks to soon discuss Rowen’s father, and Gigi agrees, though she dreads it.
