CHAPTER—XV
Overview
John confronts a Delta crowd at the hospital, denouncing soma and igniting a riot by throwing away the drug. Helmholtz joins him; Bernard falters. Police quell the disturbance with soma vapor and calming audio, then arrest John, Helmholtz, and Bernard.
The clash crystallizes John’s rebellion and pushes the trio toward direct conflict with the World State.
Summary
At the Park Lane Hospital for the Dying, John enters a vestibule crowded with Delta twins receiving their soma ration. Recoiling from their uniformity and recalling Linda’s death, John’s grief hardens into a resolve to oppose the drug he sees as enslaving them.
When distribution begins, John interrupts, calling soma poison and urging the Deltas to throw it away. He seizes the pillboxes and flings them out a window, declaring he brings freedom. The Deputy Sub-Bursar slips off to call the police as the Deltas grow angry.
Bernard and Helmholtz, summoned by a hospital contact, arrive to find John provoking the crowd. As the Deltas move to attack, Helmholtz exultantly joins John, both punching attackers and discarding the remaining soma. Bernard hesitates on the edge of the fight, torn between fear and shame.
Police arrive in gas masks, dispersing soma vapor and playing a Synthetic Anti-Riot Speech that soothes everyone into tearful reconciliation. Bernard, babbling for help, is tranquilized by a water pistol anesthetic. Fresh soma is redistributed; the Deltas depart, pacified.
The Sergeant demands compliance. Bloodied but calm, John and Helmholtz agree to go quietly. Bernard tries to slip away but is seized as a friend of the prisoners, and all three are taken to the waiting police car.
