CHAPTER—IX
Overview
With Lenina on an eighteen-hour soma holiday, Bernard executes a plan: he secures Mustapha Mond’s authorization to bring John and Linda to London, savoring his new influence. Meanwhile, John breaks into the rest-house, worshipfully contemplates the sleeping Lenina but resists desire, then flees as Bernard returns.
The chapter shifts power to Bernard and deepens John’s idealizing yet conflicted attraction to Lenina, setting up their collision in London.
Summary
After the disturbing day in Malpais, Lenina declares a complete holiday, takes heavy doses of soma, and falls into an eighteen-hour sleep. Bernard, sleepless but purposeful, conceives a plan.
The next morning, Bernard flies to Santa Fé while Lenina remains unconscious. He contacts Mustapha Mond through Whitehall, presents the case of John and Linda, and receives immediate authorization to bring them to London. Bernard has the Warden process the paperwork, basks in his sudden importance, and returns to Malpais in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, John arrives at the rest-house and, finding it locked and believing Bernard and Lenina gone, despairs. Spotting Lenina’s suitcase through a window, he breaks in and becomes entranced by her belongings, overwhelmed by her scent and the intimacy of her things.
Discovering Lenina asleep in pink zippyjamas, John kneels beside her, revering her beauty and quoting Shakespeare. He struggles with desire—momentarily tempted to unzip her garment—then recoils in shame and clings to an ideal of “pure and vestal modesty.”
Hearing a helicopter approach, John hastily retreats and exits through the window. He slips away along the path just in time to meet Bernard as Bernard lands back at Malpais, setting the stage for their departure.
