CHAPTER—IV

Overview

Lenina publicly accepts Bernard’s New Mexico trip, exposing Bernard’s discomfort with intimacy and public norms. A flight with Henry showcases the society’s leisure and caste order. Bernard’s alienation deepens, contrasted with Helmholtz Watson’s intellectual dissatisfaction. Their meeting cements a bond between two misfits, foreshadowing challenges to World State values.

Summary

In a crowded lift of Alphas, Lenina cheerfully announces to Bernard that she would love to go with him to the Savage Reservation, doing so openly and playfully. Bernard, embarrassed by the public intimacy, tries to move the conversation elsewhere. An Epsilon-Minus liftman, rapt by the word “Roof,” and a disembodied voice ordering floors underline mechanized obedience as they emerge onto the sunlit roof. Lenina departs for her date with Henry, leaving Bernard pained.

Benito Hoover warmly praises Lenina’s attractiveness and offers Bernard soma for his gloom, prompting Bernard to flee. Meanwhile, Henry and Lenina lift off by helicopter, surveying London’s organized amusements, factories, and caste-differentiated crowds. They remark hypnopædic prejudices and proceed to Obstacle Golf, exemplifying the society’s recreational focus and order.

Bernard, feeling pursued and out of place, struggles with his inferiority and resentment toward lower-caste workers as he orders Delta-Minus twins to wheel out his plane. His physical slightness compared to other Alphas fuels paranoia and brittle superiority. He flies to the Propaganda and Emotional Engineering complex to see Helmholtz Watson.

Helmholtz, an exceptionally capable Alpha-Plus writer and lecturer, resists invitations from three eager women and meets Bernard. Their short flight and later conversation in Bernard’s room reveal Helmholtz’s growing dissatisfaction: he senses a power and “something important to say” but finds only trivial subjects sanctioned by the culture. He wants words that pierce, but the permitted topics feel empty.

Bernard tentatively connects this to stifled emotions, while Helmholtz insists it is a deeper creative hunger. Bernard’s sudden suspicion that someone is at the door betrays his nerves and persecution feelings; no one is there. Helmholtz feels sympathy tinged with embarrassment for Bernard, as their shared sense of apartness—physical for Bernard, intellectual for Helmholtz—binds them and hints at future dissent.
