CHAPTER—XII
Overview

Mustapha Mond suppresses a heretical biology paper, reaffirming control of ideas. Bernard seeks comfort from John and Helmholtz; Helmholtz bonds with John over Shakespeare but rejects its parental taboos.
Summary
Bernard begs John to attend a party arranged to flaunt him before high-ranking guests, including the Arch-Community-Songster. John refuses, denouncing the event, and locks himself in. Bernard must face the guests alone; the men are furious, the women scathing, and the Arch-Community-Songster publicly admonishes Bernard before leaving with an dejected Lenina. Bernard collapses into misery and soma.
Meanwhile, John reads Romeo and Juliet. Lenina accompanies the Arch-Community-Songster, numbly considering soma. Elsewhere, Mustapha Mond reviews and censors a brilliant but “purpose”-driven biology paper as dangerous to social stability, noting such truth may be inadmissible in their society.
Morning brings Bernard’s despair. John offers blunt sympathy, arguing unhappiness is preferable to false joy. Bernard resents John despite needing him. Bernard also reconciles with Helmholtz, who, without soma, forgives him; Bernard feels both gratitude and jealousy.
Helmholtz reveals he has been threatened by Authority for reciting his own “solitude” rhymes in class. He feels newly inspired despite punishment. Helmholtz and John quickly bond over poetry, deepening Bernard’s jealousy; Bernard pettily interrupts their readings to wound them.
During a shared reading of Romeo and Juliet, Helmholtz admires Shakespeare’s technique but laughs uncontrollably at the parental coercion of Juliet and the taboo-laden setup, alien to their world. Offended, John shuts his book. Helmholtz apologizes yet insists the society needs a different kind of “madness and violence” to write about, unsure where to find it.
