CHAPTER—V
Overview
Lenina and Henry end their date with soma, synthetic entertainment, and dutiful contraception, casually affirming conditioning and society’s utilitarian view of death. In parallel, Bernard attends a Solidarity Service whose ritualized soma, hymns, and sexual consummation fuse the group—except Bernard, whose alienation deepens.
The chapter contrasts contented conformity with Bernard’s failure to achieve the promised communal atonement, sharpening his outsider arc.
Summary
At dusk, Lenina and Henry leave Obstacle Golf and fly over London’s industrial landscape. Passing the Slough Crematorium, Henry proudly explains phosphorus recovery from corpses, celebrating social utility after death. Lenina echoes hypnopædic maxims about caste equality and usefulness, revealing how conditioning shapes their reactions.
They dine, take soma, and visit the Westminster Abbey Cabaret, where color-organ shows and “sexophonists” extol the comforts of the Bottle. Wrapped in a soma-holiday, they dance blissfully, heed closing-time prompts, and return to Henry’s room. Despite intoxication, Lenina automatically performs contraceptive precautions, embodying internalized Malthusian discipline.
On his alternate Thursday, Bernard heads to the Fordson Community Singery, arriving late and unhappily seated beside Morgana Rothschild, whose unibrow distracts him. The twelve-person Solidarity Group begins its ritual: synthetic music, shared strawberry ice-cream soma, and hymns beseeching the Greater Being to fuse Twelve-in-One.
As the soma works, the President cues a disembodied Voice proclaiming the Greater Being’s approach. The group’s expectancy crests into drumming, chants of “Orgy-porgy,” dimming crimson lights, and a collective sexual consummation, symbolizing atonement and communal unity.
Afterward, participants like Fifi Bradlaugh radiate serene fulfillment. Bernard, however, feels only sharper separateness and failure, lying that it was “wonderful” while fixated on Morgana’s eyebrow. The promised dissolution into the Greater Being eludes him, intensifying his sense of isolation.
