CHAPTER—XI
Overview
Bernard leverages John’s fame to gain status, while Linda sinks into continuous soma that will soon kill her. John is appalled by the World State’s regimentation, death-conditioning, and amusements, and refuses soma. Mustapha Mond laughs off Bernard’s critiques. After a feely, John rebuffs Lenina, clinging to idealized chastity and Shakespeare.
Summary
After John’s public exposure of the D.H.C., London clamors to see “the Savage,” while Linda is shunned and chooses continuous soma-holidays. Dr. Shaw supplies escalating doses, predicting her imminent death. John objects on moral grounds but yields, visiting Linda despite her degradation.
Bernard becomes influential as John’s gatekeeper, collecting favors and lovers, and parading his contrarian views; Helmholtz disapproves, straining their friendship. Mustapha Mond reads Bernard’s pompous report, amused by Bernard’s presumption.
On official tours, John views London from Charing-T Tower, then a helicopter-lighting factory where caste-segmented, identical workers assemble parts. The mechanized regimentation nauseates him. Bernard notes John’s refusal of soma and his attachment to Linda despite conditioning against aging and ugliness.
At Eton, John sees upper-caste education, Malthusian drills, and a curriculum of reference-only texts; Shakespeare is banned, distractions come from feelies. He witnesses students laughing at penitential self-flagellation and learns of early death-conditioning and crematorium visits. Hypnopædia control rooms showcase engineered morality.
At Brentford, John watches lower-caste crowds receive daily soma rations. That evening, Lenina escorts him to a popular feely. John is aroused yet condemns it as base and ignoble, then flees Lenina’s implicit invitation at her apartment. He retreats to Othello, while Lenina numbs her hurt with soma.
