The family dinner at Junior's parents' house drags on with mounting tension. After Maria clears the plates, Nico Senior finally demands to know what Junior wants to discuss. Junior reveals he bought a downtown building from Patrick McKinney by buying out and weaponizing his gambling debt, that the building houses a legitimate members-only club he intends to leave operating, and that he is striking out on his own and quitting the family business.

Nico Senior tries to provoke and shame Junior, accusing him of pimping, money laundering, and drug-running, then orders Aly out. Aly refuses, Josh backs her up, and Junior insists Lauren stays. When his father calls Lauren a whore, Lauren defuses it with a cutting joke about her work, and Junior threatens his father with the one weapon that matters: cutting him out of his life entirely. Josh and Junior had planned this confrontation in the open precisely so Nico Senior couldn't hide his abuse.

Nico Senior throws a wineglass at Junior, soaking him and Lauren. Chaos erupts: Aly yells, Moira shoves her husband over, and Stefan slips out. Nico Senior threatens to have Tommy actually killed in Italy, exposing the cover-up in front of Aly and Josh. He then lunges and strangles Junior. When Junior gasps "Dad," his father falters in horror, and Lauren tasers him to the floor, dropping him.

Josh dry-heaves at the smell of burning flesh. Stefan returns briefly with a packed bag and tells them they should all leave to teach Nico Senior a lesson, then disappears, seemingly for a long time. Moira insists on staying behind to manage Nico Senior, believing she is his last tether to humanity and the only one who can keep him from retaliating. Alec and Greg urge her to leave, but she refuses.

Outside, Junior, Lauren, Aly, and Josh regroup. Junior explains his father's worsening behavior stems from fear of appearing weak in their world, and predicts he won't come after them because Moira will hold him in check. They agree they're done with these dinners, and Josh suggests they start their own family dinners instead, which everyone enthusiastically embraces.
