Chapter 25

At the Tyne Valley oyster shucking competition, a bagpiper leads a procession of contestants, including Felix and his former boss Ray. The emcee explains rules and penalties as early heats reveal varied techniques and times. Bridget reflects on the past fallout with Joy and considers mending their friendship, while Lucy notes the closeness between Ray and Felix.

Felix enters the final heat with Joy as his timer. Locking eyes with Lucy before the countdown, he shucks rapidly and taps out at 1:33. Joy jubilantly leaps into his arms, underscoring their history and teamwork. Amid celebrations, Lucy grapples with jealousy and belonging.

When the results are announced, Felix places third after penalties. Standing beside Lucy, Felix laces fingers with her and briefly kisses her knuckles before accepting his plaque, a gesture more intimate than a kiss. Later, in the truck, Felix falls asleep holding Lucy’s hand; she pulls away, fearing attachment to a life she believes isn’t hers.

The next morning, Zach prods Lucy about her jealousy over a brunette from the night before and suggests Felix has been earnestly dating. Overwhelmed by work and Bridget’s wedding, Lucy delegates a crucial flower auction to Farah and calls client Lillian to postpone again, sensing Lillian’s waning confidence. Felix approaches, concerned, but Lucy deflects, denying anything is wrong.
