Chapter 36
Overview
Lucy drives Bridget to the airport for her move to Australia, where Miles has gone ahead to find a home. The farewell is raw and loving, revealing Bridget is six weeks pregnant. Lucy expresses devotion and finally releases Bridget, deepening the stakes of distance and change for both women.
Summary
In late October, Lucy accompanies Bridget to Pearson Airport as Bridget departs for Australia. Miles has already arrived in Sydney and is searching for a place in the inner west, underscoring the permanence of their move.
On the drive, Lucy clings to Bridget’s hand, desperate to slow time. At the terminal, Lucy manages the luggage and reveals why she is protective: Bridget is six weeks pregnant, adding urgency and tenderness to their parting.
Lucy walks Bridget to security and holds her until the last moment. An elderly woman offers tissues as they cry. Lucy tells Bridget she is her best friend, that she will miss her, and that she loves her more than anyone. Then Lucy chooses to let go, accepting the separation and the new chapter in Bridget’s life.
