Chapter 26: Annie

Overview

Annie mourns her mother, then finds joy with Bobo as their friends prosper. A nightclub set leads to Babydoll’s impromptu performance and Clyde’s public proposal, prompting Bobo to propose to Annie. Overnight, Isaiah arrives, confesses lying about Hattie Lee’s death, and gives an address, sparking a fight and reopening Annie’s longing.

Annie keeps the address despite Bobo and friends urging her to let go, underscoring her unresolved need for her mother and testing her bond with Bobo.

Summary

Annie spends twenty-eight days in deep grief for her mother, neglecting herself and intimacy with Bobo, until a tangerine-lipstick patron comforts her with the idea of a mother’s unimpeded love in heaven. The next morning, Annie feels restored and reconnects with Bobo, beginning a stretch of happy “salad days” as their fortunes improve.

Bobo advances at the Peabody and gigs with a blues singer; Clyde secures steadier work; Annie and Babydoll gain seniority at the Elektra. During a packed Saturday set, the singer Luster Lee invites Babydoll to perform. She charms the room, first with a tender ballad then an electric number, igniting attention that provokes an uncharacteristically jealous Clyde.

Clyde halts the show to stake his claim, then, flustered, publicly proposes. Babydoll accepts to cheers, and the club celebrates. Walking home at dawn, buoyed by romance, Bobo asks Annie to marry him, and they fall asleep happy, planning to celebrate.

Before dawn, Isaiah knocks, gaunt and shaken. He recounts losing his spiritual “gift” while Sweet speaks in tongues, believing God is punishing him for a lie. Isaiah confesses he falsely told Annie that Hattie Lee had died; in truth, Hattie Lee lives on South Lauderdale. He hands over the address and begs forgiveness.

Bobo, furious at Isaiah for reopening Annie’s wound, punches him; Isaiah swings back, and they scuffle until Clyde and Babydoll intervene. After Isaiah flees, Bobo, Clyde, and Babydoll vote for Annie to let the matter go, but Annie refuses to surrender the address, asserting her need to know.

That night, Bobo pleads for peace, arguing Annie had already completed her mourning. He offers a metaphor—lift heavy burdens with your legs, not your back—urging Annie to carry the weight of Hattie Lee differently. Annie, however, cannot ignore her mother living so near, keeping the address and the hope it represents.
