Chapter 14: Annie
Overview
Through exchanged letters, Annie settles in Memphis with Bobo, falls in love, and plans to approach her mother, Hattie Lee. She seeks bar work with Daniel’s help, but receives warnings from Daniel, Granny, Vernice, and Lulabelle’s camp. News arrives that Shadrack has been killed, drawing police pressure on Lulabelle’s place and closing a door to Annie’s past.
Summary
Annie writes home from Memphis, assuring Granny she is safe, sending two dollars, and postponing contact with her mother, Hattie Lee, until she can prove stability. She asks Granny’s forgiveness for leaving without goodbye.
To Vernice (Niecy), Annie describes Beale Street’s music, her deepening love for Bobo, and their shared room, confiding about intimacy and her loneliness without Niecy’s counsel. She notes Babydoll’s worldly experience, Clyde’s offense that she ignores her father, and Bobo’s worry she may be hurt seeking Hattie.
Annie asks Daniel for a letter of introduction to work in a bar and advice for approaching Hattie. She also writes Lulabelle with gratitude and affection, crediting Lulabelle’s kindness as a form of mother-love and outlining a Thanksgiving plan to visit Hattie bearing food and goodwill.
Daniel replies bluntly: he discourages Annie from seeking Hattie, warns that fantasy will disappoint, but encloses five dollars and promises the introduction letter. Granny thanks Annie for money yet rebukes her for leaving, refuses to raise more babies, urges church, and prays for both Annie and Hattie. Vernice answers hurt but loyal, saying Annie never apologized and that their bond feels altered.
Finally, Delia reports a violent turn: Shadrack has been killed in a fight with a white “sir,” prompting police pressure on Lulabelle’s place. Conveying Lulabelle’s views, Delia advises Annie not to study scripture alone or with men, not to trust Babydoll, and to stop pursuing her mother. Lulabelle declares she never wants to see Annie again, though Annie may continue to write.
