Chapter 18: Annie
Overview
Annie, working at the Elektra, mistakes a patron for her missing mother, Hattie Lee, and is sharply rebuffed, deepening her longing and embarrassment. After witnessing workplace harassment of Babydoll, Annie rejects Bobo’s safer Peabody job offer, choosing to remain where she might find Hattie Lee. Annie and Bobo reaffirm their bond despite fatigue and frustration.
Summary
In December at the Elektra, Annie scans every face for her mother, Hattie Lee, studying a worn photo for unchanging features. During a bar dispute over a spilled beer, Annie fixates on a woman in a pink minidress whose complexion, eyebrows, and long neck mirror Annie’s memory. Acting on hope, Annie asks if she is Hattie Lee, but the woman angrily denies it, demands a replacement drink, and Mr. Wilson pointedly watches, leaving Annie ashamed.
Shaken, Annie retreats to the alley with her mop, where Babydoll joins her to complain about Clyde’s reluctance to marry and the demeaning, invasive behavior of customers. Babydoll’s story of a patron licking her finger underscores the constant harassment, while she warns Annie she might be “losing it” from longing, recalling her own mother’s false hopes.
Back upstairs, Annie recounts the incident to Bobo, who struggles to understand her intuition. Annie can’t fully explain the pull of “blood calls to blood,” and they shift to Bobo’s frustration with his day job and night gigs. He suggests Annie take a more respectable, safer job at the Peabody, promising better hours and proximity to him.
Annie hesitates. Concerned for Babydoll’s safety and driven by the chance that Hattie Lee might appear at the Elektra but not at the Peabody, Annie declines. Bobo admits his selfish wish for company, and the two seek solace in each other. Annie closes the night reassured by Bobo’s goodness, even as she holds to her risky search.
