Chapter 31: Annie
Overview
After Niecy’s wedding, Bobo ends his relationship with Annie, revealing an interest in a college woman named Regenia. Reeling, Annie recalls her mother’s abandonment and writes to Lulabelle for comfort. The reply, dictated by “Mother,” is blunt: replace Bobo, be grateful for no children, and do not visit. Annie is left isolated, forced toward unwanted independence.
Summary
On the night of Niecy’s wedding, Annie comes home early, cramping and bleeding, and finds Bobo composing a breakup letter. His bags are packed; he insists he isn’t dissembling and calmly lists reasons to go. Annie, hurt and angry, demands honesty.
Pressed, Bobo admits there is someone awaiting him: Regenia, a LeMoyne–Owen student and professor’s daughter. He claims she is not “replacing” Annie, but his poise and the details make clear he is choosing a more respectable future. He leaves, wishing Annie “the best,” while she sits in pain, absorbing the loss and its finality.
Alone, Annie reflects on patterns of abandonment, recalling how her mother, Hattie Lee, handed infant Annie to Granny and left. The memory sharpens Annie’s sense that love is precarious and fleeting.
Seeking comfort, Annie writes to Lulabelle, confessing heartbreak and asking to visit, hoping to be treated like a daughter for a few days. In response, a letter signed by Lulabelle—but explicitly dictated by “Mother” and annotated by “D”—offers three blunt lessons: replace a man with another man, be grateful there are no children with Bobo, and do not come to their place.
The curt refusal closes off Annie’s hope for refuge. With Bobo gone and Lulabelle’s door shut, Annie is left to face her grief alone and consider growing up on her own terms.
