Chapter 29: Annie

Overview

Annie invites Vernice to Memphis, straining her fragile bond with Bobo. After an emotional reunion, Annie and Vernice go to Hattie Lee’s address on Palm Sunday and meet Annie Kay, confirming Hattie Lee’s new family while remaining hidden. Bobo later returns intending to leave, confessing he isn’t fulfilled; Annie shares her hurt and offers forgiveness.

Summary

Days before Vernice’s arrival, Annie admits to Bobo that she swapped his travel ticket to bring her friend to Memphis. Their relationship feels brittle despite Annie’s efforts to please him, and her unreturned “I love you” haunts their apartment.

At the Greyhound station, Annie witnesses a tense scene with a poised mother and child, then greets Vernice after a long delay. The friends share an awkward, tender reunion and confide private fears: Annie dreads losing Bobo, while Vernice worries that a past relationship may surface and harm her engagement to Franklin.

The next morning, Palm Sunday, Babydoll and Clyde briefly visit, revealing Babydoll’s jealousy and Vernice’s new polish. Later, Annie and Vernice join churchgoers holding fronds and walk to the address believed to be Hattie Lee’s. Outside, they meet a capable teenage girl, Annie Kay, caring for her little brother, Bobby. Realizing the girl’s mother is Hattie Lee, Annie withholds her identity, asks the girl to pass along a message, and declares she won’t return.

Annie glimpses movement behind newspapered windows, sensing Hattie Lee observing but choosing her current family. The encounter confirms that Annie has been replaced, deepening her lifelong hurt over abandonment.

Three days after Vernice leaves, Bobo returns, clean and contrite, to end things, saying he isn’t fulfilled. Annie begs him not to leave that day, then shares how her mother’s rejection crushed her. Bobo responds with care and remorse, acknowledging he failed to stand beside her. Annie forgives him, finding fragile solace despite their uncertain future.
