Overview
Annie and her friends reach a former farm turned brothel run by Lulabelle, where cashless barter governs survival. Annie and Babydoll are assigned grueling laundry while Clyde and Bobo do farm work to earn credit for a mechanic, Shadrack.

Summary
Annie and her companions discover the former farm is now a brothel run by Lulabelle. With little money and a broken-down car, they negotiate a barter arrangement: Clyde and Bobo perform labor, while Annie and Babydoll work in the house. Payment will be tracked as credit to “befriend” the mechanic, Shadrack, instead of cash.
Lulabelle assigns Annie and Babydoll to laundry, demanding spotless, boiled, and ironed sheets after every client. Her insistence on immaculate linens contrasts with the rough shacks, signaling strict control over standards and the business. When Babydoll talks back, Lulabelle humiliates her, asserting power and reminding them their positions are a begrudging favor.
Days later, the group shares cramped pallets during a rainy night, tired and hungry. Annie expects their wages and credit to cover the repair so they can leave. Clyde then admits he has already used some of their earned “sessions,” claiming he thought it was a tip after fixing a chifforobe and that the woman liked him.
Babydoll demands to know which woman, while Annie presses for how much credit was lost. Clyde confesses to two sessions, and Bobo warns that Lulabelle has them on a sharecropping-style ledger. The revelation threatens their plan, deepens tensions, and suggests they are being drawn into a system designed to keep them indebted.
