Chapter 3: Consortium
Overview
Hadrian is deliberately kept away from the Consortium’s arrival by being sent to hear the Mining Guild’s grievances, where he confronts the human cost of House Marlowe’s uranium profits. The meeting exposes his sympathy for commoners and his lack of real power under Lord Alistair’s rule.
Returning to Devil’s Rest, Hadrian forces his way into the reception and discovers that Crispin was invited while he was excluded. His public entrance and pointed choice to sit on the dais mark an open, if restrained, challenge to his father’s attempt to sideline him.
Summary
On the day the Wong-Hopper Consortium arrives at Devil’s Rest, Hadrian Marlowe is sent away from the castle despite the obvious preparations for important visitors. Acting under Lord Alistair’s orders, Hadrian meets Lena Balem, a Mining Guild representative, while two peltasts observe him closely.
Balem explains that Redtine Point and the uranium operations are failing: old containment systems, obsolete radiation suits, damaged refineries, worn barges, cave-ins, and exhausted drills are killing workers and threatening production. Hadrian shows more sympathy than his father or Crispin likely would, even offering condolences for seventeen workers lost in a cave-in, but he is not authorized to promise money or reforms.
The meeting deteriorates as Balem presses harder, showing anger over preventable deaths and demanding action. The guards repeatedly remind her of Hadrian’s rank, and Hadrian realizes that his gentleness has allowed her to speak more freely than she ever would to Lord Alistair. Unable to help and eager to return for the Consortium reception, Hadrian leaves with only a promise to carry her complaints to his father.
During the flight back to Devil’s Rest, Hadrian speaks with Lieutenant Kyra, the pilot. He asks about her service, her desire to fly, and her father’s work on the city light grid, revealing his curiosity about lives outside the nobility and his anxiety about what his father has kept from him.
At the castle, Hadrian evades his assigned guards and reaches the Great Keep, where Sir Roban Milosh and another guard try to block him from entering the throne room on Lord Alistair’s orders. Hadrian loses patience, pushes his way in, and finds the Consortium delegation already assembled before his father’s throne. Crispin is present, proving that Hadrian alone has been excluded.
Hadrian publicly apologizes for his lateness, kneels to the Mandari visitors, and is identified by Lord Alistair to Director Feng as his eldest son. Ordered to sit, Hadrian approaches the family chairs, finds Crispin occupying the place nearest their father, and refuses to be fully displaced. Rather than confront Crispin openly, Hadrian carries a chair onto the dais and sits there, quietly defying both his brother and his father before the guests.
