Chapter 63: Calagah

Overview

Hadrian accompanies Valka and the Springdeep research team to Calagah, an ancient ruin on Emesh's southern continent, four months after the duel with Gilliam. The site overwhelms him with its impossible architecture, unidentified black material, and undecipherable glyphs, shifting Hadrian from curiosity to genuine belief in the ancient Quiet. His reaction deepens the mystery Valka has been studying and places Hadrian face-to-face with evidence that humanity and the Cielcin are not the only great forces in galactic history.

Summary

Four local months after Hadrian kills Gilliam, Hadrian has spent time with Valka and Sir Elomas Redgrave learning Emesh's pre-Imperial history and the significance of Calagah. Hadrian's expected future marriage to Anaïs Mataro has become an open secret among the Springdeep research team, and Valka and Elomas tease him with noble titles.

Hadrian travels with Valka, Tor Ada, Elomas's team, and other researchers to the Calagah site on Anshar, Emesh's cold southern continent. While the team unloads the shuttle and clears the camp, Hadrian, Valka, and Tor Ada descend into the cleft where the ruin is embedded in the black basalt wall.

Hadrian is overwhelmed by Calagah's facade, whose black, seamless material and distorted architecture feel profoundly wrong to him. Hadrian notices that the structure's lines are subtly nonparallel, impressing Valka, who confirms the exact divergence. Valka explains that the material cannot be scanned, sampled, or identified, and when Hadrian touches it, Hadrian feels a piercing cold that Valka cannot replicate.

Inside the ruin, the group moves through low, dark, salt-stained corridors lit by Valka's glowsphere and phosphorescent tape. Tor Ada explains that the site contains chambers and branchings and may have been a temple or sacred place, though its purpose remains unknown.

In a round chamber, Hadrian sees interlocking circular glyphs across the domed ceiling and realizes why no one has deciphered them. The ruin's age, preservation, and incomprehensible design convince Hadrian that the Umandh could not have built it and transform him from skeptic into believer in the reality and magnitude of the Quiet. Valka then receives a call from Elomas saying the camp has been cleared, ending the first exploration.
