Chapter 55: The Quiet

Overview

Hadrian visits Valka for a planned meeting and, after an awkward encounter with her lover Malo, learns that her research concerns a vanished civilization called the Quiet. The black-stone ruins of Calagah, the Marching Towers, and other sites are far older than the Umandh and reveal that humanity was not the first advanced species. This discovery directly threatens Chantry doctrine, deepening Hadrian’s intellectual rebellion and his dangerous bond with Valka.

Summary

Hadrian arrives at Valka Onderra’s room with a bottle of Kandarene red that Dorian helped him steal from the castle cellars. Instead of finding Valka ready for their meeting, Hadrian finds a naked man, Malo, at the door and realizes Valka has forgotten the appointment. Valka dismisses Malo and invites Hadrian in, while Hadrian struggles with jealousy, embarrassment, and guilt sharpened by memories of Cat.

Valka and Hadrian settle with the wine, and Hadrian turns the conversation to Calagah. Hadrian questions how the Umandh could have built such complex stone ruins when their present culture seems incapable of that level of masonry. Valka eagerly shows Hadrian holographs of Calagah, revealing vast black structures built into basalt cliffs and explaining that the site may be seven hundred thousand to a million years old.

Hadrian argues that the Umandh cannot have created Calagah because they are too young and technologically limited. Valka’s answers lead Hadrian to compare Calagah with other alien black-stone sites, including the Marching Towers of Sadal Suud and the Temple of Athten Var on Judecca. Hadrian realizes that Valka does not primarily study the Umandh or the Cavaraad, but an older vanished culture whose remains appear across many worlds.

Valka confirms Hadrian’s conclusion: humanity was not the first advanced species. The revelation shakes Hadrian because it contradicts a core Chantry belief and is therefore dangerous heresy. Valka names the lost builders Ke kuchya mnousseir, translated as “the Quiet,” because their sites contain no tools, ships, bodies, artifacts, or readable records—only silent structures and carvings that no one can interpret.

Hadrian grows increasingly afraid that the Chantry or Inquisition will discover the conversation and mutilate or kill both of them. Valka remains calm, explaining that the diplomatic suites are not officially monitored and that she has already told Elomas the same information in that room without consequence. The chapter ends with Valka reassuring Hadrian that the authorities will not find out, even as Hadrian recognizes the magnitude and peril of what he has learned.
