Chapter 8: Gibson
Overview
Hadrian survives the alley attack but wakes to the painful proof that Gibson, rather than Hadrian’s parents, has been Hadrian’s real guardian. Gibson reveals that the attackers are dead, that Alistair is more concerned with family dignity than Hadrian’s suffering, and that Crispin’s brutality has made Crispin popular.
The chapter deepens Hadrian’s alienation from House Marlowe by setting Hadrian’s compassion against Alistair’s predatory politics. Gibson’s lesson on obedience and exploitation clarifies the moral divide that may cost Hadrian Hadrian’s inheritance, while Hadrian’s nightmare foreshadows darker revelations about Gibson and the Marlowe legacy.
Summary
Hadrian opens with a retrospective reflection: if Hadrian had died in the Meidua alley, the fate of Gododdin, the Cielcin, and Hadrian’s own terrible reputation would have been different. Hadrian frames the beating as a kind of baptism, contrasting Hadrian’s near death with Crispin’s simultaneous public triumph in the Colosso.
Hadrian wakes in Hadrian’s room at Devil’s Rest, strapped to a bed and encased in medical devices repairing Hadrian’s shattered hand, broken ribs, and internal injuries. Gibson, exhausted from keeping vigil, explains that Hadrian has been unconscious nearly five days and that Tor Alma repaired damage to Hadrian’s brain tissue. When Hadrian tries to move, the pain overwhelms Hadrian and Hadrian briefly loses consciousness again.
After waking once more, Hadrian asks why Hadrian’s mother is absent. Gibson reveals that Lady Liliana remains at the summer palace in Haspida and only asked to be notified if Hadrian’s condition worsened. Gibson also says Lord Alistair wants Hadrian to come see Alistair when Hadrian is well enough, and that Alistair is concerned about how Hadrian’s injuries reflect on the dignity of House Marlowe. The revelation confirms Hadrian’s sense that Gibson, not Hadrian’s parents, has acted as Hadrian’s true caretaker.
Gibson tells Hadrian that Ardian and the prefects found the attackers through surveillance footage and recovered Hadrian’s signet ring, and that the three boys are dead. Sir Roban and Kyra found Hadrian in time to save Hadrian’s life. Hadrian then confesses fear that Alistair intends to give everything to Crispin, and Gibson explains that although Alistair has not formally declared an heir, the public is enthralled by Crispin’s performance.
Hadrian tells Gibson about the failed meeting with the Mining Guild factionarius and the council session, asking what will become of Hadrian. Gibson argues that Alistair thinks Hadrian is too kind and too soft to rule, while Crispin fits Alistair’s belief that dominion must be hard. Gibson has Hadrian recite the Eight Forms of Obedience, emphasizing that obedience through fear of pain is the basest form, and implies that Alistair’s preference for Crispin is an unintended compliment to Hadrian’s character.
As Hadrian weakens, Gibson condemns Alistair’s exploitative ambition to squeeze the mines for enough wealth to buy a barony, linking that callousness to the old human habit that destroyed Earth. Hadrian drifts into a nightmare of the Marlowe necropolis, where a funeral vision becomes a terrifying image of Alistair as a living statue. The dream shifts to an impossible vision of Gibson standing straight and bearing a slit nostril, an injury Hadrian believes Hadrian saw before it was ever inflicted.
