Chapter 45: Lose the Stars

Overview

Hadrian returns to the Colosso as a court guest and sees Erdro, a former fellow myrmidon, killed for the entertainment of the same class now welcoming Hadrian. The experience sharpens Hadrian’s sense that he has traded one prison for another: poverty and the arena for Count Mataro’s luxurious control.

Amid court gossip about Makisomn, Gilliam Vas, and the coming triumph, Hadrian recognizes the cruelty and ignorance of the nobility around him. Anaïs’s curiosity and casual suggestion that Hadrian become a gladiator force Hadrian to confront how far removed these elites are from the deaths they consume as spectacle.

Summary

Hadrian attends the Colosso from a privileged box with Anaïs, Dorian, and members of Emeshi high society, but the spectacle below holds his attention more than the social introductions. He recognizes several myrmidons, especially Erdro, a disciplined fighter who had fought alongside Hadrian on his first day in the arena.

During the contests, the gladiator captain Jaffa shoots Erdro with an antique crossbow. Erdro dies, and the crowd cheers his death with the same enthusiasm it gave his brief survival. Other myrmidons disable Jaffa’s suit rather than kill him, underscoring for Hadrian the gulf between the expendable fighters and protected gladiators.

Hadrian feels trapped among luxury, wine, and polite company while Umandh slaves remove Erdro’s body. He leaves a cup of wine on the rail in Erdro’s memory, but he cannot depart without offending Anaïs, Dorian, and their circle. Pressed for stories, Hadrian boasts and lies, inventing explanations for his fighting skills and court appointment, while inwardly recognizing that he has effectively lost the chance to leave Emesh on the Uhran or Andunian ships.

The social group turns to rumors of the coming triumph and the captured Cielcin, Makisomn. Dorian hints at secrecy, while Anaïs says Gilliam Vas obtained the prisoner from foederati attached to the visiting Legion. Melandra insults Gilliam Vas as a mutant, prompting Hadrian to reflect on noble fear of inti and on the uncomfortable truth that palatines are also shaped by controlled breeding and imperial power.

Hadrian withdraws to the rail, where Anaïs asks whether Hadrian knew the dead fighter. Her detached curiosity pains Hadrian, though Hadrian decides Anaïs does not intend cruelty. When Anaïs suggests Hadrian might become a gladiator because Dorian would enjoy having one as a friend, Hadrian reacts with sudden horror, imagining being forced to kill people he cares about and realizing he is still trapped, now by Count Mataro’s favor rather than poverty.

After Anaïs leaves, Hadrian watches a farce about Cyrus the Fool surviving by luck while the crowd laughs. Isolated and bitter, Hadrian knocks Erdro’s untouched wine cup from the ledge and watches the cup pass through the Royse field and shatter on the arena floor.
