Chapter 9: Bread and Circuses

Overview

Still injured from the attack, Hadrian is summoned by Alistair and learns that his father sees the incident not as a personal trauma but as a political humiliation. Alistair punishes the district, praises Crispin’s public strength, and explains that noble power depends on fear, spectacle, and carefully maintained superiority.

The chapter decisively redirects Hadrian’s future: Alistair removes him from public contention at Meidua by ordering him to enter the Chantry seminary on Vesperad. Hadrian’s hopes of becoming a scholiast or explorer are crushed, and Crispin is effectively positioned as the preferred successor.

Summary

A week after the attack, Hadrian Marlowe has his rib brace removed, though his hand remains trapped in a painful corrective device. Barefoot and still weak, Hadrian travels through the Great Keep and the prefecture capitol to answer Lord Alistair Marlowe’s summons. At the entrance to Alistair’s office, Hadrian thanks Sir Roban Milosh for saving his life, but Roban deflects the gratitude and admits Hadrian to see his father.

Alistair does not ask after Hadrian’s condition. Instead, Alistair demands to know why Hadrian was in the city and why Hadrian left the Colosso. Hadrian says the bloodshed disgusted him, but Alistair frames the matter as political damage: Hadrian’s public departure from the games, followed by his injury at the hands of commoners, has made House Marlowe look vulnerable.

Alistair explains that noble authority depends on fear, spectacle, and the people’s belief that their rulers are tangible powers above ordinary humanity. Because Hadrian’s assault was broadcast before Alistair and Tor Alcuin suppressed it, Alistair has imposed a curfew on the offending district and ordered violators shot. Hadrian objects that this brutality will worsen unrest, but Alistair dismisses his concern and argues that rule requires domination rather than consent.

Alistair then reveals the consequence of Hadrian’s failure: Hadrian will be sent to Lorica College on Vesperad to enter the Chantry seminary. Hadrian refuses, despising the Chantry as an instrument of terror and realizing that the decision effectively removes him from succession. Alistair confirms that he never declared Hadrian his heir and that Crispin will remain at his side if Crispin continues to prove himself.

Hadrian insults Crispin’s cruelty and stupidity, prompting Alistair to strike him. When Hadrian insists that he wants to be a scholiast and join the Expeditionary Corps, Alistair mocks the dream and says House Marlowe needs someone inside the Chantry. Hadrian understands that this has long been planned, but Alistair declares that the recent scandal has accelerated it: Hadrian will leave for Vesperad in three months, and the decision is final.
