Chapter 65: I Dare Not Meet in Dreams

Overview

While exploring Calagah, Hadrian discovers a chamber that should not exist and experiences a violent, prophetic-seeming vision of the Cielcin, a vast ship, destruction, and the words This must be. When Hadrian returns, six hours have passed though he believes only minutes elapsed, and the passage to the chamber has vanished.

The event deepens the mystery of the ruins and hints that Calagah may be connected to forces far beyond archaeology. It also fractures Hadrian’s bond with Valka, who treats his account as a superstitious lie rather than a discovery.

Summary

After several weeks at Calagah, Hadrian accompanies Valka and Sir Elomas through the alien tunnels. Hadrian asks why the site is still being searched if it has already been mapped, and Elomas explains that the ruins contain sealed, isolated chambers and may hide more spaces. Valka and Elomas continue studying the structure while discussing the Chantry, the war, and the possibility that the Cielcin threat could reach Emesh.

Hadrian wanders ahead into a round, anaglyph-covered tunnel after feeling a strange breeze. Following safety protocol, Hadrian calls back to the others, then proceeds with a hand lamp and glowsphere. On the way back, Hadrian finds a narrow passage he is certain had not been there before and squeezes through into a vast, dry chamber with a dais and an enormous circular glyph marked by a single ray.

When Hadrian touches the glyph, the cold sensation from his first visit to the ruins returns with greater force. Hadrian sees his reflection move in the black stone, but the reflected eyes are green instead of violet. The contact overwhelms Hadrian with visions: a strange city and empty cradle, a vast statue-covered ship, Cielcin armies burning worlds, a greater crowned Cielcin figure, the great ship plunging into a star, and a final command: This must be.

Hadrian falls back from the dais, shaken, then tries to find Valka and Elomas. Hadrian cannot locate them underground and returns to the surface, where Valka confronts him in panic and anger. Hadrian believes only about twenty minutes have passed, but Valka reveals he has been missing for six hours and that Elomas has gone to contact Springdeep for a search party.

Hadrian tells Valka about the chamber, but Valka insists there is no branch off that tunnel. They return and search the passage repeatedly, finding nothing. Hadrian finally describes the vision as well, but Valka rejects it as a lie or superstition, accusing Hadrian of posturing and treating him as a barbaric noble. Hadrian insists he is not lying, but Valka turns away from him in contempt.
