Chapter Eighteen: Spotlight

Lachlan presents Lark with a Kane Atelier leather harness, its tiny gold stars tied to memories of her and moments he misjudged. He admits shame for past treatment, vows to earn forgiveness, and says he wants their marriage to be something she can be proud of. Lark decides to wear the harness to her show and gives him a gift to open later.

On the drive and at the alley stage door, their teasing turns incendiary. Lachlan cages Lark against the wall, confessing jealousy and desire, and they nearly kiss before Xander from KEX interrupts. Introductions follow, and Lark heads to the dressing room, warning Lachlan not to open his present until her signal.

Lachlan waits at the bar through the opening act, then watches Lark take the stage with KEX. She shines during the first set, repeatedly meeting his gaze. Lark announces a new original, “Ruinous Love,” and dedicates it to him, the lyrics signaling forgiveness and a fierce, consuming love that overwhelms Lachlan.

During the next song, Lark gives a “bat signal” and Lachlan opens her present: a remote for a toy she’s wearing. At her direction, he starts and modulates the vibration while she plays cello. He edges her publicly, alternately denying and granting intensity, until she climaxes onstage while maintaining the performance.

As the song ends and the crowd cheers, Lark smiles at him in sweaty triumph. By the time she looks up again, Lachlan has disappeared, leaving their escalating trust, desire, and fragile forgiveness hanging on what comes next.
