Chapter Fifteen: Signals

Late at night, Lachlan waits for Lark’s call and invites her out from the sleep retreat, promising a surprise and an alibi. They arrive at Dr. Louis Campbell’s lakeside cabin, where Conor has restrained the headmaster. Lachlan warns Lark she can walk away, then enters to confront Campbell with archived emails proving staff repeatedly raised concerns about Laurent Verdon’s behavior and Lark’s distress, which Campbell ignored.

Campbell pleads and claims leverage via recordings with the Montagues, but Lachlan reveals he already seized those materials. Lark enters, corrects Campbell to “Mrs. Kane,” and opens a toolbox Lachlan prepared. She methodically sews Campbell’s lips shut with gold thread, recounting how Sloane helped her after Verdon’s assaults. Lark then executes Campbell with Lachlan’s gun while Lachlan stands by.

Conor will drive Lark back. Before leaving, Conor alerts Lachlan to irregular $50,000 monthly payments through Club Pacifico, owned by Lucas Martins, a cousin of Bob Foster—potentially linked to the larger scheme targeting Lark’s family. Lachlan cleans the scene and begins body disposal.

Near dawn, Lachlan returns home, hides a “trophy” from the kill in Lark’s craft room and begins crafting it in epoxy and gold wire. Lark calls from the retreat; they debrief quietly, flirt, and Lachlan reads her the Constantine script until she falls asleep, strengthening their intimacy while preserving the retreat alibi.
