Summary
Rose reflects on her grandmother’s belief that real magic is possibility, a lesson she sees proven at the Silveria Circus and now in the aftermath of violence. On the factory floor, Abe Mead lies dead. Rose turns from his body, focusing instead on the beauty of Lachlan and Lark locked in a fierce embrace, imagining calmer days ahead for them.
Rose notices a small hole in her shirt and only a few drops of blood, a “little trick,” but feels a burning pain beneath her ribs. Growing cold, she quietly lies down, unseen by the others as they remain wrapped in shock and relief.
Footsteps and shouts break across the concrete. Fionn bursts in, repeatedly calling for Rose, his voice sounding distant to her. Lark locates Rose and cries out for help as the scene blurs for Rose, who recalls the focused fear and surrender of riding a motorcycle through a cage—choosing to speed toward a single point of light.
The world brightens to white as Rose’s awareness narrows. In her final moment, she sees Fionn and recognizes him as home and love. Holding to belief like a final magic trick, Rose dies with that certainty while Lachlan and Lark remain entwined, the violence ended but marked by her loss.
