Chapter Nineteen: Exposed
Overview
After her performance, Lark believes Lachlan abandoned her, but he reveals he was waiting and they reconcile. Their charged intimacy escalates backstage with boundaries affirmed, interrupted briefly by Xander. Planning to leave together, they collect gear. Abe reappears, quotes scripture, pointedly calls Lark “Miss Montague,” and departs, raising unease.
Summary
Post-show, Lark cannot find Lachlan and spirals, crying in the backstage bathroom, fearing she crossed a line with the onstage vibrator stunt. Lachlan bursts in, revealing he was waiting in the dressing room and wanted her to drive them home so he could be with her. He asks whether she meant her sung forgiveness; Lark confirms.
They confront mutual desire and jealousy as Lachlan admits being aroused and frustrated watching her climax onstage. He reactivates the toy, demands she show it to him, and they push boundaries with explicit consent checks and safewords. Lachlan refuses to have their first full sex in a bar bathroom, insisting they wait until home, but he brings Lark to climax while holding her and using the toy.
Xander accidentally walks in, prompting Lachlan’s furious dismissal and a flash of possessiveness. The couple banter—Lark teasing him about jealousy—and decide to leave together immediately, with Lark driving. Lachlan reassures her appearance, and they head to collect instruments.
While packing, a man from Lachlan’s shop—Abe—approaches Lark. He compliments her cello, speaks about music as escape, quotes scripture, and, with a disquieting flatness, calls her “Miss Montague,” thanking her for inspiration before slipping away. Lark is left unsettled as she and Lachlan prepare to leave.
