Chapter Ten: Trophies

Overview

Lachlan searches the apartment, uncovering Lark’s hidden cache of macabre trophies, including teeth-filled "maracas" and a ring on a preserved finger. Confronted, Lark admits to approximately ten killings, framing herself as a "multiple deleter" acting to protect loved ones. Alluding to Sloane’s past, she departs, and Lachlan resolves to truly investigate who Lark is.

Summary

Lachlan, determined to understand Lark and prevent her from doing something he cannot fix, searches their apartment. Behind a Constantine poster he uncovers a hidden box containing unsettling items: a coaster woven from a stained bootlace, leather "maracas" that spill human teeth when crushed, and a mason jar holding a severed finger wearing a signet ring, suspended in formalin with glitter like a snow globe.

When Lark returns, Lachlan confronts her with the items. She deflects with humor until he presses, then admits she made the snow globe because it was “festive.” Pushed further, she rejects the label “serial killer,” calling herself a “multiple deleter,” and, after wavering, claims roughly ten killings. Lachlan’s alarm grows as he questions motives and scope.

Asked why, Lark says she kills so no one she loves has to do it for her again, implicitly pointing to Sloane’s past incident at boarding school. She refuses to discuss details, grows wary when Lachlan advances, and tries to leave. On the stairs, they argue: Lark insists he already judges her, that she hides this from Sloane and Rowan to spare them, and that telling him changes nothing. She asserts her married name, Lark Kane, and exits with Bentley.

Left alone, Lachlan realizes how little he knows about her despite their marriage and her confession. He resolves to dig deeper into Lark’s past and identity, leaving the apartment with renewed determination.
