Keeping vigil over sleeping Maevyth, Zevander senses movement beyond the door and prepares to confront an intruder. General Loyce’s disembodied voice taunts him with threats against Maevyth, triggering memories of past torment. Determined to protect his mate, Zevander slips into the corridor to hunt the shadowy figure he glimpsed.

He tracks the presence through cold, familiar temple passages into a row of iron-barred cells that evoke whispers, screams, and ghostly images. When he demands his pursuer reveal themselves, a cloaked figure emerges: Theron, smiling and armed, claiming survival through a healing bloodline despite Zevander having killed him.

Zevander raises sablefyre from his palm, though the flame flickers weakly. Trading accusations, Theron suggests amity while Zevander names betrayal, blaming Theron for exposing his secret and prolonging his century of imprisonment. Theron shows remorse; Zevander counters that protecting Theron had been his own regret.

As the confrontation peaks, a sharp, violent pain seizes Zevander’s skull. He collapses to his knees, clutching his head, with the threat of Loyce’s pursuit and Theron’s return converging as his power falters, leaving Maevyth’s safety and Zevander’s control in immediate jeopardy.
