Chapter 24

In a past scene, Zevander wakes to the scent of real food after prolonged deprivation. He notices a golden collar at his throat and bandaged wounds on his thighs, reminders of fresh abuse. Members of the Gildona feast nearby as Theron, a scarred Solassion, approaches with a plate and introduces himself.

As Zevander eats, he realizes Theron stitched his wounds. Theron warns that their mistress treats Zevander’s defiance as a game and will escalate torment until he complies. He argues there are material advantages to staying alive and compliant—food, baths, pillows—though both life here and in the mines remain slavery.

Theron produces a small ampoule of purple elixir, explaining it dulls pain, hastens healing, and leaves a man sexually unresponsive, potentially humiliating the mistress and discouraging her. He speaks from experience, revealing that most captives die within a month unless they learn to bend and “choose their grief.”

Zevander rejects the logic of survival through submission, declaring he will neither bend nor break, even preferring the mines to this captivity. Seeing Zevander’s resolve, Theron departs with a Solassion battle phrase—“Mor samanet,” meaning death awaits—expressing hope that Zevander survives what is to come.
