Maevyth slips into Zevander’s room and finds him trembling in a bath, eyes black with terror, clutching her necklace and a dagger as he carves his thigh to breathe. When Maevyth intervenes, Zevander, lost in a trance, briefly grabs her throat before recognizing her and breaking down, admitting the voices and memories suffocate him.

Refusing to leave, Maevyth insists on helping. Zevander confesses that pain and the blade are his only tether, that pleasure is fused to hurt by enchanted piercings. At Maevyth’s urging, he guides her to understand his needs; through her metallic nails, she inflicts controlled pain while keeping connection, bringing him to release. The act leaves them shaken with shame and tenderness, and Maevyth demands reassurance that he knows she is not his abuser.

They choose closeness without penetration. Zevander holds Maevyth as she asks for comfort and honesty; he calls her his light yet unworthy of it, and she reframes his scars as marks of an unbroken warrior. He declares her his, lifts her from the bath, and they lie together by the fire.

As they rest, Zevander uses Sablefyre to warm and soothe Maevyth, and, with her consent, he pleasures her quietly, heightening her arousal with the flame’s vibration and his mouth. They speak of angels, vengeance, and his capacity to touch fire without harm, deepening trust and vulnerability.

Talk turns to blood as sustenance: animal iron helps him like diluted vivicantem; human blood is stronger. Maevyth suggests offering her blood, but Zevander refuses because blood-bonding during consummation is eternal and would complicate their peril. Instead, he resolves to find the map to locate the sustaining vein. He warns that Maevyth may become his replacement toxin—his grounding poison—confessing a consuming dependence on her, even as she asks him to turn to her rather than self-harm.
