Chapter 52

After escaping the tomb, Maevyth and Zevander silently gather food in the temple pantry. Zevander prompts conversation about the men they rescued, and Maevyth presses him about their shared past in Caligorya. He reveals he once only glimpsed her life and felt drawn to her, but had lost those memories until recently.

When Maevyth mentions Lilleven, Zevander admits he broke a sacred rule: he willed Lilleven’s death and intervened, breaching the boundary. He declares Maevyth is his mate, marked by Death since the night he kissed her in her cell. Maevyth, furious that she was almost burned for his act, argues fate could have changed and that his interference might have altered her mother’s life. Zevander insists her prior hardships would have stood and accepts blame for her suffering while refusing to renounce their bond.

As tension spikes, Zevander urges Maevyth to vent her anger on him, even pressing a dagger to his own chest. She refuses to harm him despite her pain. He asserts he will never let her go, apologizes for her suffering, and kisses her with fierce possessiveness. Maevyth responds, then pushes him away, and Zevander leaves with their supplies.

Later, alone in the temple, Maevyth reflects on her near-execution and Zevander’s voice that once sustained her. A sudden chill and dying flies presage the appearance of her mother’s spirit, throat gashed and skin carved with crosses. In a brief, lucid exchange, her mother says she tried to save Maevyth, speaks of fate as a tightening knot, and urges Maevyth not to mourn a life that never was but to accept what she is becoming.

Her mother calls Maevyth “the frost that wilts the vine,” warns against yielding to others’ will, and promises that Maevyth will be vindicated. As Maevyth reaches for her, cold overwhelms her, her breath fails, and she slips into blackness.
