Chapter 53

Awakened by crashes, Maevyth finds Father and Aleysia worried outside Zevander’s room. Inside, Zevander rages in a delusional state, hunting an unseen tormentor with a dagger while Raivox watches from the window, ready to strike. Zevander corners Maevyth and nearly slits her throat before her pleas and confession of love pierce the madness, halting him at the brink.

Horrified by what he almost did, Zevander recoils, insisting he is dangerous and unworthy. Maevyth counters with unconditional love and refuses to leave him. He admits his control frays under old tortures and the vivicantem’s effects. As they cling to each other, both confess love and ownership of the bond.

They attempt intimacy carefully. Zevander fears losing control and causing harm; Maevyth promises to stop him if needed. He prepares her and enters only partly, relying on the enchantment of his piercings for her pleasure while restraining himself. When Zevander cuts his own palm to manage his need for pain, Maevyth instead guides him to focus on her; she uses her clawed glove against his chest as she straddles him, giving him the pain he requires while both find release. Later, in a bath, Zevander explains he previously captured Theron alive and has locked him in the vault below. As a contingency if they cannot find vivicantem, he proposes binding Theron to Aleysia to secure their safety through an unbreakable bond. Maevyth resists but concedes the idea might be revisited if survival demands it. They plan to seek the vivicantem vein in the Lyverian Mountains, weighing Father’s frailty and scarce resources.

They end the night with tenderness and vows: Zevander cannot let Maevyth go; she insists he stop imagining leaving her. With affection and resolve, they lie down to rest, intent on the journey ahead.
