Overview
Physically restored, Winston trains himself to accept Party doctrine and practice crimestop, yet an involuntary cry for Julia exposes lingering private rebellion. He resolves to preserve inner hatred even at death. O’Brien deems Winston’s emotional conversion incomplete and orders him to Room 101 to make him love Big Brother.
Summary
Winston’s conditions improve: he is cleaned, fed regularly, given dentures, new clothes, and a slate. Growing stronger, he exercises and begins methodically to re-educate himself, copying Party slogans and accepting the mutability of the past and the Party’s infallibility.
He reasons through collective solipsism, suppresses doubts, and trains crimestop—teaching himself to ignore contradictions such as “two and two make five.” Despite intellectual submission, he remains uncertain when execution will come and imagines the traditional sudden shooting from behind.
During a blissful reverie of the Golden Country, Winston involuntarily cries out for Julia, realizing his inner heart still resists the Party. He decides he must hide his secret even from himself and fantasizes about dying with a final, unrecoverable burst of hatred—equating that hidden defiance with freedom.
O’Brien enters with guards, assesses Winston’s progress, and tests his emotions. When Winston admits, “I hate him,” about Big Brother, O’Brien declares the last step is to love Big Brother. Concluding Winston has failed emotionally, O’Brien orders, “Room 101.”
