Winston travels to the countryside to meet the dark‑haired girl. She silently leads him to a concealed clearing, explaining it is free of microphones. Awkward at first, Winston confesses his age, marriage, and initial violent fantasies and suspicion of her. She identifies herself as Julia and discards her Junior Anti‑Sex League sash, signaling defiance.

Julia shares rare black‑market chocolate and explains her tactic of exaggerated public orthodoxy—games, processions, and League work—to stay safe. They speak in whispers about hating the Party, especially the Inner Party, and walk to the wood’s edge where Winston recognizes the scene as his “Golden Country.”

A thrush’s exuberant song dissolves Winston’s anxieties. Their embrace deepens; they return to the clearing for safety. Julia swiftly undresses, echoing Winston’s dream. She admits to multiple affairs with Party members (not Inner Party), and Winston welcomes this as proof of underlying corruption that could rot the Party from within.

They make love, and afterward doze in the sun. Watching Julia sleep, Winston feels tenderness but frames their intimacy as a blow against the Party. He concludes that in their world no emotion is pure; their desire is inseparable from fear and hatred, yet their union is a deliberate, political act of rebellion.
