Winston drifts in and out of consciousness, recalling brutal beatings by guards and prolonged, humiliating interrogations by Party intellectuals. He confesses to countless real and invented crimes. Fragmented memories include a moment when an officer orders him to Room 101, intensifying his dread.

Strapped to a bed under harsh lights, Winston faces O’Brien, who controls a pain dial. O’Brien asserts that Winston is mentally ill and demonstrates Party truth by producing the photograph of Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford—then burns it, declaring it never existed. O’Brien argues that reality exists only in the Party’s collective mind.

O’Brien uses escalating pain and relentless questioning—“How many fingers?”—to break Winston’s certainty. Winston alternates between insisting on four and pleading for relief, until drugs and a new, painless shock induce a fleeting state in which he genuinely sees five fingers and accepts Party statements as absolute truth.

O’Brien explains the Party’s goal: not mere confession or punishment, but conversion—erasing heresy and remaking the mind before destroying the body. He vows that Winston will be emptied of love, joy, and integrity, and then filled with the Party.

Given a chance to ask questions, Winston learns Julia immediately betrayed him and was thoroughly “converted.” O’Brien declares Big Brother the embodiment of the Party, leaves the Brotherhood’s existence unknowable, and answers about Room 101 only with, “Everyone knows what is in Room 101,” before having Winston sedated.
