Winston’s fear spikes when the dark-haired girl fixes on him, deepening his paranoia and isolation.
Summary
In the crowded underground canteen, Winston meets Syme, a Newspeak philologist seeking razor blades amid constant shortages. They collect their meager lunch and gin, and Syme, eager to talk, describes the Eleventh Edition of the Newspeak Dictionary, glorifying the destruction of words to make thoughtcrime literally inexpressible.
Syme details how antonyms and synonyms will vanish into precise formations like “ungood,” “plusgood,” and “doubleplusgood,” asserting that shrinking vocabulary will complete the Revolution. Winston feigns agreement but internally judges Syme as too intelligent and outspoken, concluding that Syme will one day be vaporized.
Parsons arrives, sweating and cheerful, to collect Winston’s contribution for Hate Week and boasts about his children’s zeal, including stalking and denouncing a man. A Ministry of Plenty broadcast then trumpets a 20 percent rise in living standards and thanks to Big Brother, even claiming joy over a chocolate ration “increase” that Winston remembers was just reduced.
As ducklike propaganda (“duckspeak”) drones from a nearby official, Winston reflects on squalor, scarcity, and whether life was always this way. He catalogs the prevailing ugliness and the beetle-like bureaucrats who thrive under the Party, sensing who will survive and who will be erased.
Noticing the dark-haired girl watching him, Winston is seized by terror, fearing amateur spies and facecrime. The work whistle ends lunch; in the scramble for the lifts, Winston’s last tobacco spills, underscoring the petty losses and constant anxiety of Party life.
