Overview
Winston is taken to Room 101, where O’Brien presents his ultimate fear: rats. Confronted with the prospect of the animals released onto his face, Winston breaks and begs that the torture be done to Julia instead. This betrayal fulfills the Party’s aim: to sever his deepest human loyalty.
Summary
Winston is strapped into a chair deep underground, immobilized and forced to face two green-baized tables. O’Brien enters and declares that Room 101 contains the worst thing in the world for each person. A guard brings in a wire cage fitted with a mask-like front, containing two large rats.
O’Brien explains that pain alone can be resisted, but the unendurable fear breaks all resistance. He details the rats’ savagery, moving the cage closer and demonstrating the levers that will release them directly onto Winston’s face. The stench and the sight trigger Winston’s lifelong terror.
As the mask nears his cheeks, Winston’s panic peaks. Realizing there is only one way to save himself, he searches for someone to place between himself and the rats. In a final, frantic collapse, Winston screams for the torture to be done to Julia instead: “Do it to Julia! Not me!”
O’Brien clicks a lever, and the cage door shuts rather than opens. The immediate threat ends, but Winston’s outcry has achieved the Party’s objective: he has betrayed Julia, demonstrating that fear can override love and loyalty, completing his psychological defeat.
