Part III — Chapter VI

In the nearly empty Chestnut Tree Café, Winston follows the telescreen while numbly drinking clove-flavored Victory Gin. He worries about alarming reports from Africa, toys with a chess problem, and reflexively writes “2 + 2 = 5” in the table dust, a sign of internalized Party truth. He reflects on O’Brien’s promise that what happens in the Ministry of Love is forever.

A memory intrudes: an accidental meeting with Julia on a bleak March day. Both physically altered and emotionally hardened, they sit apart, and Julia bluntly says, “I betrayed you.” Winston echoes her, recognizing that under torture each truly wished suffering onto the other. They agree perfunctorily to meet again, but Winston drifts away, more drawn to the café’s warmth and gin than to Julia.

Back at his table, Winston’s days blur: mornings revived by gin, afternoons spent listening to the telescreen, and a meaningless, well-paid sinecure debating trivialities for the Newspeak Dictionary. A fleeting, warm memory of playing Snakes and Ladders with his mother and sister arises, which he dismisses as a false memory. He returns to the chessboard and to thoughts of Africa, imagining a flanking maneuver that could save Oceania.

A trumpet-call heralds the bulletin: a vast surprise armada has crushed the enemy in Africa. As crowds cheer, Winston exults inwardly and feels a decisive change—no more equivocation. In a blissful reverie of confession and forgiveness, he embraces his reeducation’s endpoint. Tears on his cheeks, Winston gazes at Big Brother’s face and recognizes his final transformation: he has won the victory over himself. He loves Big Brother.
