Chapter 5: The Luckiest Chicken in the World

Overview

At rapper Marcus’s estate, Carolyn, Michael, and David free captive lions Dresden and Naga. Dresden kills Marcus’s girlfriend Aliane swiftly, then demands Marcus die in prolonged agony as payment for protecting Carolyn’s agent. Michael negotiates in the lions’ language; Carolyn consents, securing the lions’ future help.

Summary

Marcus (“Little Z”) shows model Aliane his estate’s caged lions, Dresden and Naga, boasting about capturing them in Africa after killing the mother and tranquilizing the father. As they fetch chickens to bait the lions, Aliane grows uneasy, recalling her hard past.

In a parallel sequence, Dresden dreams of home, relives the humans’ ambush, and wakes in the pit to find Michael, Carolyn, and David inside. Michael addresses him flawlessly in the language of the hunt, invoking Nobununga and asking to approach. Dresden, wary yet hopeful for Naga’s future, listens.

Back at the pits, Marcus realizes Dresden is missing. In the darkness Dresden ambushes Aliane and kills her with the hunter’s merciful touch. Panicked, Marcus flees toward the underground Husbandry Room but finds David (in a tutu), Carolyn, and Michael blocking the stairs.

Carolyn informs Marcus they released the lions and delivers Dresden’s message: there are two lion kills—the merciful and the hateful. Aliane felt no pain. Marcus, however, will die bound to anguish, as vengeance for poaching the pride, in return for Dresden’s promise to protect Carolyn’s agent “as his own cub.”

Carolyn and Michael withdraw to the secure room while David keeps Marcus topside. Dresden and Naga silently close in, and Marcus faces the retribution he set in motion, sealing the bargain that advances Carolyn’s larger plan.
