Epilogue: So, What Ended Up Happening with Erwin?

Overview

Erwin serves a decade-long sentence for coercing the new president into launching nuclear strikes on Father’s home. Carolyn materializes in his prison cell, clarifies Steve’s sacrifice, and offers Erwin a job finding Petey and running errands. Michael warns of approaching enemies, prompting Erwin to accept as Carolyn extracts him.

Summary

Erwin reflects on his arrest, swift trial, and transfer to Big Sandy after the air raid failed and food shortages worsened. Prison proves tolerable: a clean single cell, mail and books routed to him by sympathetic guards, and respect after he decisively ends early challenges. He settles into routine as the world stabilizes with sky-bread and the sun’s return.

One night at lights-out, a hand rises through the concrete and Carolyn emerges. She asks why Erwin is imprisoned; he explains he roughed up and held the new president hostage to force nuclear launches. Carolyn reveals “Mount Char” was her childhood code for Father’s hilltop house.

Erwin confirms he coerced the president to fire multiple warheads—direct hits that produced vast mushroom clouds—believing Steve’s self-immolation hadn’t fixed the world and that leaders were stalling. Carolyn acknowledges Steve used Everclear and a lighter but says she missed the strikes because she was occupied.

Instead of retaliation, Carolyn offers Erwin a job handling tasks she can’t, starting with finding a specific dog, Petey the cocker spaniel, whom she promised to recover. Michael, speaking from the toilet in another tongue, warns that hostile forces are approaching—enemies inherited from Father—prompting urgency.

As a thunderous collapse and screams echo down the corridor and dust rolls past the door, Carolyn presses for a decision. Erwin accepts immediately, grabs his book, and takes Carolyn’s hand. She plans to free him regardless but hints at teaching him “interesting things,” promising a broader plan as they escape the oncoming assault.
