Overview
At Garrison Oaks, Carolyn executes a long-laid plan: she baits David into the reissak, cripples him, times Erwin’s shot, then halts David in time at the peak of pain and despair. Margaret requests death in the bronze bull and is granted it. When Apaches intervene, Carolyn’s light compels the pilots’ suicides. The dead ones acclaim Carolyn as Sehlani as she brings Steve into the Library.
Summary
Carolyn stops short of Garrison Oaks and spots David, Margaret, and a battered Erwin under a streetlight. She sends Steve to the Library’s gate, warning that if David survives Steve must kill himself rather than be taken. Carolyn approaches, confirms Father is dead, and feigns submission to bait David close. She tears one of his testicles free, buys seconds, and retreats into the reissak perimeter where her defenses weaken intruders.
David presses in despite mounting pain and hurls his spear, chaining Carolyn through leg and foot. He drags her back and begins to strangle her—the way he killed her before—until a prearranged signal clicks into place. Erwin, having found Steve’s dropped magazine from the dog attack, shoots David in the face. In that instant, Carolyn shocks David’s pain center, then speaks a word that stops time for him, suspending him weightless at the apex of absolute agony and despair.
Erwin helps Carolyn up; Steve returns, and Carolyn reveals the orchestration: Steve’s run, the dropped magazine, the reissak trap. She explains David’s suspension as altering constants so time cannot pass for him, locking him into wazin nyata—the moment the last hope dies—intensified by a direct jolt to his pain cortex.
They confront Margaret, who, learning Father is ended forever, submits to Carolyn as mistress and asks to die in the bronze bull to find her way back to herself. Despite Erwin and Steve’s objections, Carolyn honors the request. Before they can proceed, two Apache gunships arrive; Carolyn triggers a blinding “project and defend” light that activates slave neurons, compelling the pilots to immediate suicide. The helicopters crash and burn, sealing the roads.
Erwin, shaken, declines to help further. Carolyn completes Margaret’s request; a third fire blazes as the dead ones and animals gather, murmuring “Sehlani” and weeping-smiling before the flames. Carolyn untethers the floating David, whose growing black aura spreads from his eyes, and leads Steve through the shattered facade of 222 Garrison Drive. The door opens onto vast darkness—the true Library beyond a projected shell. With Naga hesitant but following, Steve and Carolyn cross the threshold.
