Chapter 14: The Second Moon

Carolyn descends to Jennifer’s long-neglected apothecary to gather rare components for an arduous task. After weeks of work beside a mummified corpse, she succeeds in resurrecting Father. They speak candidly: he approves her coup, weighs Steve’s nature and her options, and outlines three choices for reconciling past and future. He leads her to the mis-shelved black folio and reveals its power to alter the past.

Father explains regression completeness—no ultimate understanding of this universe—and his plan to retire by creating his own. He has resurrected Nobununga and Mithraganhi and will depart with them. He also reveals that in other timelines David failed as heir and that Carolyn proved herself in unimaginable trials. Declaring the fourth age ended, he leaves for his new creation, gifting Carolyn a final, unspecified surprise.

Later, Carolyn resurrects Steve in the dusty penthouse. After a frank exchange about time passed and her changes, she offers him a token from his childhood and promises to mend the world. She outlines a plan: restore the sun, normalize the moon and tides, still Yellowstone, hide the Library, and conjure bread from clouds to stave off famine. She shows him a living vision of Earth, credits him with saving humanity, and whispers the ancient word that halts his time.

Carolyn carries the transfiguring Steve—now a sphere of boiling joy—up to the jade platform and places him in the heavens, adjusting orbits to pre-cataclysm norms. Leaving the besieged Garrison Oaks facade, she moves to a quiet Oregon farmhouse prepared long ago. After bathing and finding Father’s humorous gifts, she spots Michael alive outside with a cougar and three wolves.

Michael approaches in fear and submission, but Carolyn reassures him and invites the pack indoors. They eat and sleep by the window. As dawn breaks, Steve rises as the new sun, light returns, and Carolyn, robed and warm, watches the ice of the long winter begin to melt—the moon of kindled hope fulfilled.
