Chapter 3: The Denial That Shreds
Overview
Carolyn and the others shelter with Mrs. McGillicutty while awaiting Nobununga. Jennifer reveals the widow’s lingering grief, prompting Carolyn’s own reflections. Nobununga arrives as a tiger, identifies the barrier as reissak ayrial, and dies attempting to breach it; Michael is injured and rescued. Alicia explains the barrier’s token/trigger mechanics, and the group plans to map its edge, enlist an unaffected American to move the token, and involve David.
Summary
At dawn after killing Detective Miner again, Carolyn wakes in Mrs. McGillicutty’s house, where the exiled librarians have been staying. A flashback recounts how they won the widow’s hospitality. Over breakfast, Jennifer reads the widow’s grief—a “heart coal” over a lost son—while Carolyn quietly arranges a private meeting with Nobununga for herself, Michael, Peter, and Alicia.
Carolyn heads toward the bronze bull to meet Nobununga and hears something massive stalking her. A tiger appears—Nobununga—accompanied by Michael. After acknowledging him, Carolyn warns Peter and Alicia. They watch Nobununga approach Garrison Oaks, suspecting Father’s fate and David’s possible role.
Nobununga steps past the subdivision sign, seemingly immune to the barrier, and declares it the reissak ayrial—“the denial that shreds.” Moments later he begins to bleed and collapses. Michael sprints into the field and drops; Carolyn follows, feigning collapse while dragging Michael back to safety. Nobununga lies motionless deeper inside; they cannot reach him.
They retreat to a forest stream where Michael grieves. Regaining composure, he relays Nobununga’s last assessment that the barrier is a known construct. Alicia, drawing on her catalog, explains it: a perimeter field anchored by a physical token, intensified by proximity, and only affecting those who share an internal trigger (emotion, memory, or experience).
Reasoning that unaffected Americans still deliver mail and pizza, Carolyn proposes mapping the barrier’s boundary to triangulate the token’s likely location, then recruiting an American to move it while managing sentinels. Despite misgivings, they agree David must be included in the plan.
