Thirty-Two: Capelin Beach

Overview

The company presses along the Skill road as Fitz realizes Verity’s inner presence has vanished. The Fool, over-dosed on elfbark, crashes into troubling sleep and nightmares. Convinced he may die soon, Fitz entrusts Burrich’s earring and Molly’s location, Capelin Beach, to the Fool. Fitz then perceives a new bond linking him and the Fool.

Summary

The travelers regain the Skill road, passing a dangerous pillar Fitz is tempted to use. Fitz struggles with a nagging absence and realizes Verity’s inner presence—long hidden within him—has vanished. He withholds this fear to avoid burdening Kettricken, while Kettle occupies his mind to guard against coterie attacks and Skill drifting.

Days of rain and scarcity yield to greener valleys and a wondrous Elderling bridge. The Fool, kept on elfbark, grows manic and cruelly sharp until they reach steaming pools. While Fitz bathes, Nighteyes notes Kettricken’s near-communication through the Wit. The Fool arrives, soberly asking what should be done for Molly if Fitz dies; when Fitz reveals the village name Capelin Beach, the Fool suddenly collapses into an unnatural sleep.

Found and borne back to camp, the Fool sleeps heavily despite Kettle’s concerns about using more elfbark. Fitz and Nighteyes hunt a kid; Starling challenges Fitz’s calm. He admits the Fool would not deny a prophecy of his death, and this forces Fitz to reckon with mortality. Embracing the need to act “now,” Fitz resolves to set affairs in order rather than trust to tomorrow.

Fitz privately wakes the Fool and formally entrusts Burrich’s earring to him, asking that Burrich be told Fitz died keeping his oath and that Molly and Nettle be sought—naming Capelin Beach again while urging secrecy. The Fool dimly recalls the name from a nightmare that began when he fell asleep by the pools. They share a restorative meal, and the Fool’s barbs subside.

That night, the Fool is tormented by dreams until Fitz rouses him, momentarily sharing the terror through sudden contact. Reaching inward, Fitz discerns a faint silver thread: a bond between him and the Fool, more Wit-like than a classic Skill-joining. Nighteyes senses the Fool dimly as the Fool, half-aware, scratches the wolf’s ears, confirming the new connection.
