Twelve: Tasks

Overview

Fitz gives Kettricken Verity’s gift of the Queen’s Garden, sparking her purpose and courtly support. He tends Nighteyes and prepares to hunt Forged ones. After Patience counsels resignation and Molly reveals Regal’s meddling, Fitz defies caution, reconciles with Molly, and they consummate their bond, privately pledging marriage as Fitz resolves to seek the King’s consent.

Summary

Fitz reflects on the Red Ships war and the realm’s helplessness, crediting Verity’s unseen Skilling for many unseen rescues. From Verity’s study, Fitz delivers a message to Queen Kettricken: Verity gifts her the long-abandoned Queen’s Garden atop the tower. Kettricken’s joy galvanizes her ladies, and with Lady Modesty’s recollections, she vows to restore it despite winter’s severity.

Pain from recent injuries and memories of Galen’s abuse on that rooftop shadow Fitz’s mood. After a isolating meal with Burrich and Hands, Fitz meets Nighteyes at the old pig shed, dresses the wolf’s shoulder wound, and learns Forged ones are near. They agree to hunt them soon, framing the killing as defense of their “pack.”

Restless and lonely, Fitz visits Patience, where he unexpectedly finds Molly. He impulsively declares his love; Molly, mindful of rank and reputation, withdraws. Patience explains the social impossibility of their union and Molly’s plan to save for her own chandlery, urging Fitz to leave Molly in peace. Lacey pointedly compares Fitz to his stubborn father.

Refusing to accept defeat, Fitz climbs to Molly’s window. Inside, Molly reveals Prince Regal’s secret visits: he first accused and tested her, then offered money to leave Fitz and encouraged silence, presenting himself as a helpful messenger. Fitz recognizes Regal’s manipulation but restrains anger.

As they speak, desire overcomes caution; Molly and Fitz surrender to their feelings and make love, privately sealing their bond. Shamed by withheld truths, Fitz vows to change “tomorrow”: to cease killing and sever his Wit bond, yet today he will hunt Forged ones and then ask King Shrewd to allow their marriage. At dawn, they part with mutual promises; Molly claims herself his wife already and bids him return regardless of the King’s answer.
