The Great War

Overview

The chapter traces Sparta’s evolution from immortal benefactors of humanity to hidden factions at war. It recounts the Olympian–Chthonic Great War, the fragile ceasefire, and the Titans’ emergence that forces Chthonics into the Assembly of Death and the brutal Spartan Gladiator Competition. Reforms and dwindling power reignite factional tensions, setting the stage for renewed conflict.

Summary

The narrative opens in Sparta’s distant past, when one hundred immortal Spartans, their animal protectors, and allied creatures lived peacefully across Greek archipelagos. Humans arrived, learned arts and governance, and elevated Spartans to godhood. As Spartans migrated with them, Rome rose and prosperity expanded under Spartan guidance.

Human numbers exploded while Spartan fertility stagnated. When humans learned Spartans could be killed through dismemberment or torture, emperors sought their power and turned on them. Spartans withdrew to the Dolomites, destroyed shared advancements—including the Library of Alexandria—and vanished from human history, letting Rome collapse.

Hidden, Sparta advanced in wealth and technology but fractured into two factions: Olympian Houses with self-enhancing powers and large, mixed-blood lines, and Chthonic Houses with harm-inflicting powers and few heirs. A brittle peace held until the early twenty-first century, when the four Chthonic Houses attacked the fifty Olympian Houses, igniting the Great War.

For decades, vastly outnumbered Chthonics stalemated superior Olympian numbers through brutal abilities, annihilating weaker Olympian lines. By 2045, eight powerful Olympian Houses remained, facing four Chthonic leaders whose twenty children had been killed. Both sides neared collapse and agreed to a ceasefire, restoring a federation dominated by Olympians.

In 2050, Titans appeared and slaughtered humans. Seizing the moment, Olympians reintroduced the gods to humanity and punished Chthonics by forcing them—and their allied dark creatures—into the Assembly of Death to combat Titans and fight in the violent Spartan Gladiator Competition. Decades later, Titans persist, Chthonics slowly rebuild, Olympian heirs weaken, and a controversial marriage law deepens divisions, steering Sparta back toward war.
